Heavy Vehicle Drivers Charged for Driving with Tampered Speed Limiters

Two men, aged 41 and 47, will be charged in court on 30 September 2015 for tampering their speed limiter in their vehicles.

In July 2015, Traffic Police (TP) conducted island-wide operations and detected motorists flouting various traffic laws. Of which 16 heavy vehicle drivers were caught for speeding. Further investigations revealed that two drivers had their vehicle speed limiters tampered with, whilst driving at high speed exceeding the allowed vehicular speed limit. The speed of the heavy vehicles were detected to be at 75 km/h and 73 km/h respectively, which exceeded the vehicular speed limit of 60 km/h for both. The 41 year old driver will also be charged for failing to wear a seat belt under Rule 4(1) of the Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles, Wearing of Seat Belt) Rules.

Motorists caught for driving above the allowed speed limits, driving a vehicle with a tampered speed limiter and/or for driving without the use of a seat belt, shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $1,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months, or both, for each offence. Repeat offenders may be punished with a fine not exceeding $2,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 6 months, or both, for each offence.

TP takes a stern view on the tampering of speed limiters for the purpose of speeding as it puts the lives of the drivers and other road users at risk. TP will be stepping up our enforcement actions to deter and detect these motorists.
