The Police have arrested a 42-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of attempted snatch theft. 

On 19 May 2019 at about 1.20 am, the Police received a report that a 25-year-old woman was walking along Commonwealth Ave West when an unknown man followed her and attempted to snatch her belongings. The man fled after the victim dodged him and sought help from a passer-by.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Clementi Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on the same day. Investigations are ongoing.

Anyone found guilty for attempted snatch theft under Section 356 read with Section 511 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, may be punished with imprisonment of not less than one year and not more than 7 years, and shall also be liable to caning.

Members of the public are advised to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Avoid taking shortcuts through dark alleys or secluded areas;

     

  • When returning home alone or late at night, arrange for someone to escort you home;

     

  • Always be alert and attentive to your surroundings. If you suspect that you are being followed, remain calm and proceed to a more crowded area or call the Police to seek help;

     

  • Avoid wearing excessive jewellery or carrying large sums of cash;

     

  • Avoid placing your wallet in your back pocket. If you are carrying a handbag, sling it in front of you and ensure that it is fastened or zipped at all times; and

     

  • When on the streets, carry your handbag on the side that is away from moving traffic.
