Five Persons Arrested For A Series Of Theft Of Motor Vehicles With Common Intention

The Police have arrested five persons, aged between 18 and 45, for their suspected involvement in a series of theft of motor vehicles with common intention.

Between 23 and 31 May 2022, the Police received several reports of theft of six cars from workshops located in the vicinity of Kim Chuan Terrace and Kaki Bukit Road 4. Preliminary investigations revealed that the cars were unlocked, and had the keys left in the vehicles while they were parked at the workshops.

Through ground enquiries, investigations and with the aid of images from Police and CCTV cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division, Ang Mo Kio Police Division and Police Intelligence Department established the identities of the six persons and arrested five of them between 1 and 3 June 2022.

One of the persons, a 29-year-old man, was allegedly found in possession of identity cards belonging to two other persons without lawful authority during the arrest. He was arrested for an additional offence under Section 16(2)(b) of the National Registration Act 1965.

Five cars have been recovered and investigations against the 42-year-old man, and two women, aged 34 and 36, are still ongoing.

The 29-year-old man, and the remaining two other persons, an 18-year-old female teenager and a 45-year-old man, will be charged in court on 4 June 2022 with theft of motor vehicle with common intention. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years and a fine. Anyone found guilty of the offence of possession of identity card of other person without lawful authority can be convicted to a fine of up to $10,000 or to an imprisonment term of up to 10 years, or both.

The Police will not tolerate such brazen acts of theft, and will spare no effort to apprehend such offenders and deal with them in accordance with the law. We would like to advise everyone to refrain from leaving their car keys in the vehicles, and to lock the car whenever it is left unattended, even for a short while.
