The Police are investigating a 34-year-old man who is believed to have committed mischief and lodged a false police report.

On 24 September 2020 at about 1.00pm, the Police received a report from a man that his company’s private ambulance was spray painted with loanshark-related graffiti.

During the course of investigations, officers from Tanglin Police Division detected several inconsistencies in the man’s account. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to have lodged a false report after unlicensed moneylenders had harassed him for debts incurred by his colleague, and he spray painted the ambulance with loanshark-related graffiti to pose as loanshark harassment by the unlicensed moneylenders directed at his colleague. Investigations against the man are ongoing.

The offence of giving any information, which he or she knows to be false to a public servant under Section 182 of the Penal Code, carries an imprisonment term which may extend to two years, or fine, or both. The offence of mischief under Section 426 of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment term which may extend to two years, or fine, or both.

The Police would like to remind the public that police resources could have been put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies than investigating into false reports or false information. Those who lodge false police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.
