Police Advisory – Phishing Scams Involving Fake Advertisement Campaigns And Lucky Draws From Banks

The Police would like to alert members of the public of a new variant of phishing scam involving fake advertisement campaigns and lucky draws from banks.

In this variant, victims would either receive a message via WhatsApp purportedly sent from a local bank, or they would come across a fake advertisement on Facebook from a bank to participate in lucky draws or certain promotions to win attractive prizes. After clicking on the URL link embedded in the text messages or fake advertisements, victims would be redirected to a fake bank website where they are required to provide their internet banking details and One-Time Passwords (OTPs). Most of the victims only realised that they have been scammed when they discovered that unauthorised transactions have been made from their bank accounts. Scammers may also modify such sites from time to time in order to target customers from different banks and payment service providers.

Members of the public are advised to adopt these crime prevention measures:

  1. Do not click on URL links in unsolicited advertisements and text messages, especially those related to lucky draws or contests;

  2. Always verify the authenticity of the information with the official website or sources;

  3. Never disclose your personal or Internet banking details and OTP to anyone; and

  4. Report any fraudulent transaction involving your bank accounts or any fraudulent credit/debit card charges to your bank and cancel your card immediately.

For more information on scams, members of the public can visit www.scamalert.sg or call the Anti-Scam Hotline at 1800-722-6688. Anyone with information on such scams may call the Police hotline at 1800-255-0000 or submit information online at www.police.gov.sg/iwitness.
