The Police arrested 16 men and 10 women, aged between 43 and 82, for their suspected involvement in illegal gambling activities in a five-day operation conducted by Central Police Division at Everton Park, Geylang Bahru, Temple Street and Jalan Besar.

All twenty-six persons were arrested for offences under the Common Gaming Houses Act and the Betting Act. Cash amounting to $8,499 was seized during the operation. The Police are also investigating them for breaching safe distancing measures under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020. Investigations are ongoing.

Under the Common Gaming Houses Act, any person who has the care or management of or in any manner assists in the management of a place kept or used as a common gaming house shall be liable on conviction to a fine between $5,000and $50,000 and shall also be punished with imprisonment for up to three years.

Under the Betting Act, any person who acts as a bookmaker or for the purpose of book making or settling bets shall be liable on conviction to a fine between $20,000 and $200,000, and shall also be punished with imprisonment of up to five years.

The Police will continue to clamp down on criminal activities. Those found engaging in such activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law. Members of the public are also advised to take the circuit breaker measures seriously.
