Man Arrested For Unauthorised Transactions Using Stolen Credit Card Details

The Police have arrested a 22-year-old man for his suspected involvement in using stolen credit card details to make unauthorised purchases.

On 1 March 2022 at about 4.40pm, the Police received a report from a victim who discovered that several unauthorised transactions were allegedly made with his missing credit card. Preliminary investigations revealed that during a meet up, the man had allegedly misappropriated the victim’s credit card details and later used it to make more than 80 unauthorised transactions amounting to more than $23,000. Some of the items that were purportedly purchased using the victim’s credit card details included small value purchases at supermarkets, transport top-ups and food deliveries, a branded bag, and apparels.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from the Commercial Affairs Department established the identity of the man and arrested him on 3 March 2022. Various apparel, shoes, skincare products and a handbag which were allegedly purchased using the stolen credit card details were recovered and seized as case exhibits.

The man will be charged in court on 5 March 2022 with cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence of cheating carries an imprisonment term which may extend to 10 years and a fine.

The Police would like to advise all credit and debit card holders to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Opt for SMS OTP verification for purchases or charges to your credit / debit cards;

  • Opt for an SMS notification to be sent to your handphone for any charges incurred on your credit / debit card; and

  • Check the bank statements regularly and alert the bank immediately should there be any discrepancies or unauthorised charges discovered.
