The Police have arrested two foreign travellers, both aged 22, for their suspected involvement in a series of shop theft cases at Changi Airport.
On 25 November 2024, the Police were alerted to a case of shop theft after a box of perfume valued at $162 was discovered missing from a retail outlet located in the transit area of Changi Airport. Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from CCTVs, officers from the Airport Police Division quickly established the identities of the man and the woman, and arrested them within 45 minutes before their scheduled departure.
Further investigations revealed that the duo was also allegedly involved in theft of nine other perfume bottles amounting to more than $2,500 from other outlets in the transit area on the same day.
The duo will be charged in court on 6 December 2024 with the offence of theft in dwelling with common intention under Section 380 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code 1871. The offence of theft in dwelling carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years and a fine.
The Police take a serious view of shop theft cases and offenders will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law. Offenders should not think that they can evade capture by quickly boarding a flight; the Police will continue to work closely with stakeholders to prevent and deter shop theft cases.
