Man Swiftly Arrested For Inciting Violence Via Telegram Chat Groups

The Police have arrested a 34-year-old man for his suspected involvement in inciting violence through chat groups on Telegram.

On 30 December 2019, the Police received a report that a Telegram user had posted comments in Telegram chat groups to call for personal mobility device users to gather at Punggol Park at 9pm on the same day, and cause injury to anyone they see.

Through investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 31 December 2019 at 10am. Two mobile phones were seized.

Investigations are ongoing. The offence of making an electronic record containing an incitement to violence, punishable under Section 267C (b) of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, carries an imprisonment term of up to 5 years, a fine, or both.

The Police takes a serious view of anyone involved in criminal activities and will continue to take tough enforcement actions against those who break the law.
