Police have arrested a 42-year-old man at Bedok North Street 3 for suspected loanshark harassments at HDB estates.

 

          Police had received several reports of aggravated loanshark harassments involving splashing of paints, affixing bicycle locks on metal gates and writings on walls of residential units at various estates islandwide in the first two months of 2015. Acting on the reports, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 9 February 2015.

 

          The man is believed to be involved in at least six cases of UML harassments island-wide and will be charged in Court on 11 February 2015 for loanshark harassment. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than 3 and not more than 6 strokes.
