Police have arrested a 47-year-old man believed to be involved in several break-ins into public housing units located in Bukit Panjang.

On 17 June 2015 at about 6.45 am, Police received a report of a house break-in. The house occupants had discovered that their valuables consisting of laptops, handphones and cash were stolen from their unit.

Through extensive ground enquiries, officers from the Jurong Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him at Jelebu Road on 22 July 2015 at about 3.35 pm. He is believed to be involved in other similar cases reported in the neighbourhood.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 24 July 2015 for an offence of Housebreaking and Theft by Night under Section 457 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which is punishable with imprisonment for a term of up to 14 years and a fine.

Houseowners should adopt the following crime prevention measures against break-ins:

  1. Ensure that all doors, windows and other openings are properly secured with good quality grills and close-shackled padlocks;

  2. Keep large sums of cash in banks and expensive jewellery in a safe deposit box;

  3. Secure all doors and windows before retiring to bed or when leaving your house unattended, even for a short while; and

  4. Install a burglar alarm, to cover the access points into your premises. Ensure that they are tested periodically and in good working condition.
