Police are investigating a 40-year-old man for making a false police report on 2 August 2015 at about 2.00 pm, alleging that he had been robbed along Orchard Road.

The man claimed that he was assaulted by men, who then took his belongings including cash and mobile phone, before fleeing the scene.

Upon receiving the police report, officers from the Tanglin Division conducted extensive enquires at the alleged crime scene. However, inconsistencies were found in the information provided by the man. He eventually admitted that he had provided false information to the Police about the alleged robbery.

Investigations against the man are ongoing. Anyone who is convicted for giving any information which he knows to be false to a public servant shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to $5000, or with both.

The Police would like to remind the public that Police resources could have been better used to deal with real crimes and emergencies than investigating into false reports or false information. Those who lodge false Police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.
