In a ceremony held at Central Division today, two members of public have been commended for their public-spiritedness. With their assistance, Police have arrested a 26-year-old male suspect and recovered a phone in connection with a case of snatch theft that occurred at City Hall MRT station on 19 November 2015 at about 8.30pm. The suspect will be charged in Court on 21 November 2015 for the offence of snatch theft, which carries a jail term of up to 7 years and shall be liable for caning.

These members of public have displayed acts of public-spiritedness. Upon hearing the victim’s loud cry, Mr Tan Choon Hiang and Mr Liew Shen Wei Edwin gave chase before detaining the suspect prior to Police’s arrival. The stolen handphone was recovered from the suspect.

Commander of Central Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Daniel Tan said, “This case illustrates the close partnership between Police and the Community in fighting crime. The brave, selfless and civic-minded individuals truly deserve to be commended for playing an important role in assisting Police to arrest the suspect.”

Police would like to remind members of public to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Avoid exposing your valuables unnecessarily.
  • Be alert of your surroundings at all times especially of suspicious persons who could be following them.
  • Be wary of strangers approaching you or trying to distract your attention.
  • When confronted, you should remain calm. You should try to take note as much details of the culprit as you possibly can, such as his appearance, clothing, height and other physical description. You should also take note of the culprits direction and mode of escape. Call 999 as soon as it is safe to do so.
