Police are investigating against a man and a woman, aged 22 and 66, who are believed to have lodged false reports of robbery in two separate incidents.

In the first case, on 19 November 2015 at about 1am, a 22-year-old man lodged a police report alleging that he was assaulted by two unknown men with one of them armed with a knife. The men were reported to have taken his belongings including cash, jewellery and his mobile phone, before fleeing the scene. Officers from the Jurong Division conducted extensive inquiries at the alleged crime scene. However, inconsistencies were found in the information provided by the complainant. He eventually admitted that he had provided false information to the Police about the alleged robbery. He had in fact lost his items and had lodged a false police report that he was robbed, in the hope that the police would take his loss more seriously.

In the second case, on 22 November 2015 at about 12 am, a 66-year-old woman lodged a police report, claiming that she had been robbed at Jurong West St 42. She alleged that two unknown armed men had threatened her with a knife and had robbed her of cash amounting to $900/- before fleeing off. It was later established that the woman had gambled away her money and lodged the report to account to her family members.

Investigations against both persons are ongoing. Anyone convicted for giving any information which he knows to be false to a public servant shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to $5000, or with both.

The Police would like to remind the public that Police resources could have been put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies than investigating into false reports or false information. Those who lodge false Police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.
