Police are investigating a 20-year-old man believed to have lodged a false report of robbery.

On 29 November 2015 at about 2.27am, the man made a Police report claiming that he was robbed by two unknown assailants. He claimed that one of them had looped a rope around his neck from behind while the other removed $100 from his wallet before fleeing.

Officers from the Tanglin Division conducted extensive inquiries upon receiving the report. In the course of investigation, many inconsistencies were detected and through the skillful interviews by the officers, the suspect eventually admitted that he had provided false information to the Police.

Investigations against the man are ongoing. Anyone convicted for giving any information which he knows to be false to a public servant shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to $5000, or with both.

The Police would like to remind the public that Police resources could have been put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies than investigating into false reports or false information. Those who lodge false Police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.
