With the assistance of two members of the public, the Police have arrested a 48-year-old man for suspected involvement in a case of Armed Robbery along Jurong West Street 65.

On 20 February 2016 at about 1.55 pm, a 51-year-old woman was walking along Jurong West Street 65 when the suspect is believed to have armed himself with a paper cutter and took the victim's handbag containing cash and valuables amounting to about $810/-. The victim shouted for assistance and two civic-minded members of the public, Mr Li Hong Yi and Mr Yu Yin Soon, detained the suspect after a chase. The Police then arrested the suspect after being alerted of the incident. The stolen items and a paper cutter believed to be used by the suspect were seized as case exhibits.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 22 February 2016 with an offence of Armed Robbery under Section 392 read with 397 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which carries an imprisonment term of up to 14 years and up to 12 strokes of cane.

Commander of Jurong Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Koh Wei Keong, commended the two members of the public for assisting in the arrest. He said, This case illustrates the close partnership between the Police and the Community in fighting crime. Mr Li and Mr Yu have played an important role in the arrest, and their selflessness and public-spiritedness are indeed commendable.”

The Police would like to remind members of public to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

  • Avoid wearing excessive jewellery or carrying large amounts of cash or valuables;
  • Avoid dark, quiet and secluded places;
  • Be alert of your surroundings at all times; and
  • Remain calm when confronted and take note of the suspects appearance, clothing, height and other physical description. They should also take note of the suspects direction and mode of escape. Call 999 as soon as it is safe to do so.
