The Police have arrested a 34-year-old man believed to be involved in two separate cases of housebreaking and theft from vehicle in the Woodlands housing estate.

On 1 March 2016 at about 6.35 am, a house occupant was awoken by noises from her balcony and found a male subject in her residence at Rosewood Drive. Upon discovery, the male subject fled away. A designer handbag, amongst other items, were subsequently found missing. The house occupant then reported the matter to the police.

On the same day at about 8.15 am, a member of public reported to the police that he saw a male suspect believed to be stealing items from a parked vehicle at Blk 173 Woodlands St 13. Officers from Jurong Division swiftly responded to the call and with information provided by the alert resident, they arrested the suspect in the vicinity. Preliminary investigations revealed that the same suspect is believed to be involved in the earlier housebreaking case. A pair of sunglasses, four bottles of perfumes, and two ATM cards found in his possession were seized as case exhibits.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 4 March 2016 for the offence of Housebreaking and Theft by Night under Section 457 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which is punishable with imprisonment for a term of up to 14 years and a fine.

Property owners should adopt the following crime prevention measures against break-ins:

  1. Ensure that all doors, windows and other openings are properly secured with good quality grills and close-shackled padlocks;
  2. Keep large sums of cash in banks and expensive jewellery in a safe deposit box;
  3. Secure all doors and windows before retiring to bed or when leaving your house unattended, even for a short while; and
  4. Install a burglar alarm, to cover the access points into your premises. Ensure that they are tested periodically and in good working condition.
