The Police have arrested a 32-year-old woman for her suspected involvement in online purchase scams.

In January 2016, the Police received multiple reports from victims who were purportedly cheated by a seller who had offered diaper bags for sales online. The suspect had convinced the victims to transfer the payment for the bags to a bank account with the promise that the bags will be delivered by post. However, the suspect was un-contactable after the payments were made.

Officers from Tanglin Division followed up on the reports and established the identity of the suspect. She was subsequently arrested along Chai Chee Ave.

The suspect will be charged in Court with Cheating under Sec 420 Chapter 224 on 15 March 2016. Anyone found guilty of committing Cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, may be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend up to 10 years, and shall be liable to a fine.

Members of public are advised to adopt the following measures to avoid falling victim to online purchase scams:

  1. Make your online purchases only from reputable vendors;
  2. If advanced payments are necessary, only transact with people you know and trust;
  3. Check that the person or company you are buying from is physically located where they claim to be and
  4. Check the company or seller’s track record. Make enquiries with the clients and customers about the service they received from the seller.
