The Police have arrested a 17-year-old youth for his suspected involvement in a series of loanshark harassment cases.

On 2 April 2016, the Police received a report that the front door of a residential unit along Hougang Avenue 1 had been set on fire and secured by a bicycle lock. Loanshark graffiti was also scribbled on the wall at the staircase landing near the unit. Through close collaboration and extensive ground enquiries, officers from Ang Mo Kio and Bedok Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him along Punggol Walk on 5 April 2016. Preliminary investigations revealed that he is believed to have committed similar loanshark harassments cases in Ang Mo Kio, Bedok and Tampines.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 7 April 2016 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
