The Police have arrested three men, two aged 18 and one aged 23, for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

On 8 April 2016, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment where the main door of a residential unit at Blk 60 New Upper Changi Road was burnt and loanshark-related graffiti were found written on the walls outside the unit. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of Police Cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Bedok Division arrested two subjects aged 18 and 23 at Bukit Batok on 14 April 2016.

Through further follow up efforts, their 18-year-old accomplice was arrested along Pending Road. He is believed to be involved in another similar harassment case at Blk 395 Yishun Avenue 6.

A black coloured cap, a marker and a hand held burner had been seized as case exhibits.

All three suspects will be charged in the State Courts on 15 April 2016. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.

The Police have zero tolerance against loanshark harassment. Those who deliberately vandalise properties will be arrested swiftly and dealt with severely in accordance with the law. Upon conviction, these perpetrators can expect to be caned and jailed for damaging property and causing alarm to the general community. No effort will be spared to nab them to face the full consequences of their misdeeds regardless of their age.
