The Police have arrested two youths aged 15 and 18 for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

 

On 24 April 2016 at about 8.00 pm, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment where loanshark related graffiti was scribbled on the wall, and paint was splashed on the door of a unit at Blk 65 Commonwealth Drive. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of Police Cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Clementi Division established the identities of the suspects and arrested them on 26 April 2016 at Marsiling Housing Estate.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were believed to have carried out similar act of loanshark harassments in Yishun, Jurong, Telok Blangah, Bedok, Tampines, Eunos, Marsiling, and Commonwealth housing estates.

Both suspects will be charged in Court on 28 April 2016 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
