The Police have arrested a 19-year-old man for his suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

 

On 2 May 2016, Police received a report on loanshark harassment where a residential unit at Jurong East St 32 was splashed with paint with its gate being padlocked with bicycle lock and loanshark related graffiti found on the wall near the staircase landing. Through extensive ground enquiries and the viewing of images from Police Cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Clementi Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him at Sungei Gedong Road on 3 May 2016. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment at Bedok housing estate, Pasir Ris housing estate, Yishun housing estate, Sembawang housing estate, Woodlands housing estate, Marsiling housing estate, Tampines housing estate and Lor Ah Soo housing estate. A mobile phone was seized as a case exhibit from the suspect.

 

The suspect will be charged in Court on 5 May 2016 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
