The Police have arrested two men aged 21 and 25 for their suspected involvement in two separate loansharking activities.

 

On 21 April 2016, Police received a report that a unit in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 had been splashed with paint and loanshark related graffiti were found scrawled on the wall near to the unit. Through extensive ground enquiries, officers from Ang Mo Kio and Jurong Division arrested the 21- year-old suspect in the vicinity of Montreal Drive on 3 May 2016. He is believed to have carried out similar loanshark harassment in Ang Mo Kio and Bedok housing estates.

 

In another case, on 26 April 2016, Police received a report that a residential unit at Blk 471 Ang Mo Kio had been splashed with paint and loanshark related graffiti were found scrawled on the wall near to a staircase landing. Officers from Ang Mo Kio Division and Bedok Division collaborated on the case and arrested a 25-year-old suspect at Marine Parade Road on 3 May 2016. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out similar loanshark harassments in Pasir Ris, Sengkang, Ang Mo Kio and Bukit Panjang housing estates. 

 

The two suspects will be charged in Court on 5 May 2016 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
