The Police are investigating a 49-year-old woman believed to have lodged a false report of robbery.

On 10 May 2016 at about 2.28 pm, the woman made a report claiming that she was robbed by two unknown men at Lorong 7 Toa Payoh sometime back in April 2016. She claimed the men had covered her head with a plastic bag, punched her and asked for money.  The robbers fled after she told them she had no money with her.

Officers from the Tanglin Division conducted extensive enquiries upon receiving the report. In the course of investigations, many inconsistencies were detected and through the skillful interviews by the officers, the woman eventually admitted that she had provided false information to the Police.

Investigations against the woman are ongoing. Anyone convicted for giving any information which he or she knows to be false to a public servant shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to $5000, or with both.

The Police would like to remind the public that Police resources could have been put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies than investigating into false reports or false information. Those who lodge false Police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.
