Man Arrested for Theft of A Motorised Sampan and Attempting to Leave Singapore Unlawfully

The Police Coast Guard (PCG) arrested a 32-year-old man for suspected theft of a motorized sampan and attempting to leave Singapore unlawfully on 17 May 2016.

 

On 17 May 2016 at about 10.33 pm, PCG detected a sampan rowing towards the direction of Malaysia at the sea off Lim Chu Kang. PCG immediately deployed both land and sea resources to intercept the sampan. At about 10.57pm, a PCG craft successfully intercepted and arrested a 32-year-old man onboard. Follow-up investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have stolen the sampan and was attempting to leave Singapore unlawfully.

 

The suspect will be charged in Court on 19 May 2016 with the offence of Theft under the Penal Code, Chapter 224 and Attempting to Leave Singapore Unlawfully at Unauthorized Point of Departure under the Immigration Act, Chapter 133. If convicted for the offence of Theft, the suspect may be punished with imprisonment term of 3 years, or a fine, or both. Any person guilty of an offence under the Immigration Act for which no special penalty is provided shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $2,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both.
