Police Have A Duty To Respond To Calls Of Suspicious Behaviour In Public Places

We refer to the letter "Should Couple be Faulted for Calling Police?" by Mr Gabriel Goh that was published in TODAY on 13 May 2016.

The Police have a duty to respond to calls reporting suspicious behaviour in public places. On 7 May 2016, the Police responded to a call about a person who was going around pulling at the door handles of cars parked near Bishan Park. After the Police established that the person was a youth with special needs and assessed that he posed no harm to the public, the Police contacted his mother. The youth was handed over to his guardian after he arrived.

The Police handled the special needs youth in an appropriate manner. The Police have also since clarified its actions with the youth’s mother and consider the matter closed. We thank the public for partnering us in keeping Singapore safe and secure.
