The Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC) and Traffic Police (TP) launched the Singapore Road Safety Month (SRSM) 2016 today at Qihua Primary School. The SRSM is in its fourth year and this year’s event focuses on safety for children and cyclists.

To improve road safety for children and cyclists, the SRSC has worked closely with partners such as Volvo Trucks and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to introduce new educational initiatives on safe crossing of roads and cycling. Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Social and Family Development, graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour.

Children and Road Safety

SRSC, together with Volvo Trucks Singapore, launched the ‘Stop, Look, Wave’ programme for children, a programme to inculcate a set of drills to enable students to steer clear of heavy vehicles’ blind spots. Approximately 280 students from Qihua Primary School had undergone a classroom theory segment and a hands-on session at the Volvo truck display area to learn about heavy vehicles’ blind spots and safe road practices. This programme complements TP’s on-going efforts on engaging and educating children on road safety and will be rolled out in primary schools in the South, East and West Zones in Singapore.

Safe Cycling Programme

Cycling has become increasingly popular as a convenient mode of transport, especially for first and last mile connections to transport nodes. To ensure that cyclists are able to cycle safely, a new Safe Cycling Programme will be launched. The programme piloted today by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SRSC involves teaching students from East View Secondary School safe cycling practices, the proper use of cycling infrastructure as well as the rules and code of conduct for cycling. The programme, conducted through a mix of theory and practical lessons, focuses on everyday scenarios such as how to overtake path users and cross roads safely. Feedback gathered during the pilot will be used to further refine the curriculum and pedagogy. Besides students, LTA will pilot the programme with foreign workers and the general public. The final programme will be offered in schools (secondary and above), community centres and foreign worker dormitories by the end of this year.

SRSC and TP hope that with these new initiatives, the community can adopt a better and safer RoadSense culture to safeguard each other. Everyone can do their part when it comes to road safety.

Qihua PrimarySchool students also learned about the dangers posed by blind spots around heavy vehicles in the interactive, hands-on session at the Volvo truck display area. This is also part of the ‘Stop, Look, Wave’ Children Road Safety Programme.
