The Geylang Serai Hari Raya Bazaar has commenced on 4 June, and will end on 5 July 2016. Large crowds are expected at the bazaar, especially during the weekends. The Police would like to advise the public to remain vigilant against crime by adopting the following measures;

  • Never leave your handbag, wallet or mobile phone unattended in public places;

  • Do not be distracted by strangers creating a commotion or accidentally bumping/spilling something onto you;

  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash with you;

  • Do not adorn your children with excessive gold jewellery as they are easy targets for potential criminals; and

  • Avoid placing your wallet in your back pocket and always remember to sling your handbag in front of you and ensure that it is fastened or zipped at all times.

The public can also minimise opportunities for would-be criminals to commit molest by adopting these measures:

  • Be alert to your surroundings. When possible, move away if someone stands or sits exceptionally close to you;

  • If you suspect that you are being followed, remain calm and proceed to the nearest open business premise, crowded area or call the Police to seek help;

  • Stay close to your friends or move around in groups when in crowded places; and

  • If you are molested, call for help immediately by shouting or seek help from people nearby to increase the chances of apprehending the culprit. Call ‘999’ as soon as possible.

Heavy vehicular traffic is expected along Changi Road and Sims Ave during this period. Motorists are advised to avoid the affected roads, make alternative travel arrangements and drive with caution. Auxiliary police officers will be deployed at all affected road junctions to regulate traffic and assist motorists. Strict enforcement action will also be taken against illegal parking.

Lastly, the Police take a serious view of persons setting off improvised explosive devices constructed using sparklers. Such improvised explosive devices are potential fire hazards, cause noise pollution and undue alarm to the public. The blast effect from the explosion can also cause injury to persons and damage to property. Anyone caught setting off improvised explosive devices may be prosecuted in Court for an offence of negligent conduct with respect to any explosive substance under Section 286 of the Penal Code Chapter 224.  If convicted, the offender will be liable to an imprisonment term which may extend to one year or fine up to S$5,000, or with both. Should the act lead to any hurt caused, one may be liable to prosecution for voluntarily causing hurt with heated or explosive substances under Section 324 of the Penal Code. If convicted, the offender will be liable to an imprisonment term which may extend to 7 years, or with fine, or with caning, or with any combination of such punishments.
