The Police have arrested one man and two women aged between 19 and 27, in relation to a loanshark harassment report involving the setting of fire to the front door of a unit at Blk 61B Strathmore Avenue on 19 June 2016.
On 21 June 2016, Police arrested a 19-year-old woman in connection to the case. Follow-up investigations and operations by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) led to the arrest of two other suspects, a 26-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman, on 23 June 2016 along Stadium Walk. Preliminary investigations revealed that the trio are believed to be responsible for three other cases of loanshark harassment reported on 19 June 2016. These cases were at Fernvale Link, Rivervale Crescent and Lorong 2 Toa Payoh, and had involved harassment by splashing paint and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti.
The 19-year-old suspect had been charged in Court on 23 June 2016 while the remaining two suspects will be charged in Court on 24 June 2016 with loanshark harassment. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offenders found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than three and not more than six strokes.
Director CID (Covering), Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Sekher Warrier, said, “Police have zero tolerance for such lawless acts which endanger innocent lives. Such perpetrators can expect to be arrested and face the full consequences for their offence regardless of their age.”
