The Police have arrested 3 youths aged between 16 and 17 for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

On 13 June 2016, the Police were alerted to two cases of loanshark harassment at Blk 683B Choa Chu Kang Crescent and Blk 7 Marsiling Drive. Officers responded to the scenes and found that units at the two locations were splashed with paint and loanshark-related graffiti were also scrawled on walls.

Through extensive ground enquiries and the assistance of Police Cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Jurong Division established the identities of the three suspects and arrested them at Tah Ching Road on 22 June 2016. Preliminary investigations revealed that the three suspects are believed to have also carried out loanshark harassment in Jurong West, Choa Chu Kang, Marsiling, Sembawang, Sengkang, Hougang, Aljunied and Woodlands housing estates.

The three suspects will be charged in Court on 24 June 2016 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition), first-time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of up to 5 years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than 3 and not more than 6 strokes.
