2 Men Arrested for Evading a Road Block, Dangerous Driving and Other Offences

The Police have arrested a 39-year-old man and a 28-year-old man for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of Evasion of Road Block and Dangerous Driving on 26 June 2016.

On 26 June 2016 at about 4.15am, officers from Traffic Police (TP) were conducting a road block along Sims Way in the direction of the Pan Island Expressway (PIE), when a 39-year-old motorcyclist stopped his vehicle a distance before the road block and fled on foot. After a brief pursuit, the police officers managed to detain the motorcyclist who put up a violent struggle. During the struggle, a police officer was injured and was subsequently conveyed to hospital with minor injuries. The 39-year-old motorcyclist was arrested for evading a roadblock, voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant, unlawful possession of schedule weapon and other driving and drug- related offences.

In a separate case, on the same day at about 8.50pm, officers from TP were performing routine vehicular checks along Lorong 101 Changi in the direction of Changi Road. While checking on a black car, the 28-year-old driver sped off from the location. During the pursuit, an accident occurred between a TP car and another car along Geylang Road. A police officer was subsequently conveyed to hospital with minor injuries. The 28-year-old driver of the black car was later arrested at about 2.20am on 27 June 2016 for dangerous driving and other driving related offences.

Investigations are ongoing for both cases.

Under Section 64(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276, motorists caught for dangerous driving, upon conviction, shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $3,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months, or both and in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years, or both.

The Police conduct road blocks to deter and detect crimes. Members of public are advised to cooperate with police officers when approached during road blocks. Any evasion of a road block can potentially cause serious harm to other road users. Any person convicted of Evading a Road Block shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or both.

The Police also take a serious view against members of public who abuse public servants. Any person convicted of an offence of Voluntarily Causing Hurt to a Public Servant shall be punished for a term which may extend to 7 years, or with fine, or with caning, or with any combination of such punishments. Perpetrators who assault public servants or public service workers can be expected to be dealt with to the full extent of the law.
