The Police have arrested a 34-year-old man for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

On 25 May 2016, the Police received a report of loanshark harassment at a HDB residential unit along Jalan Membina. On 27 June 2016, at about 11.20 p.m, acting on information received, officers from Central Division arrested the suspect in the vicinity of Clarke Quay.  Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have committed loanshark harassments at Jalan Membina, Ang Mo Kio, Hougang and Serangoon by locking the gates of debtors’ units and leaving debtors’ notes on doors.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 29 June 2016.  Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first-time offender found guilty of acting on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender, committing or attempting to commit any acts of harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years, a fine not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to caning of not less than 3 and not more than 6 strokes.
