The Police have arrested 10 men, aged between 40 and 56, for their suspected involvement in providing remote gambling services.

On 1 July 2016, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted simultaneous raids at multiple locations islandwide, including Bedok, Punggol, Ang Mo Kio, Geylang Bahru, Jurong West, Aljunied and Sembawang, resulting in the arrests. During the operation, cash amounting to about S$400,000, an array of computers, mobile phones and other documents such as betting records were also seized as case exhibits. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are believed to have received soccer bets amounting to more than an estimated S$2,400,000 in the past two weeks.

Investigations against all the suspects are ongoing.

Under the Remote Gambling Act 2014, any person who provides unlawful remote gambling services for another shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or to both.

Head of the Specialised Crime Branch of CID, Superintendent of Police Lawrence Eng, said, “This operation was conducted as part of the Police’s ongoing efforts to crack down on unlawful remote gambling, especially during the ongoing UEFA EURO 2016. Police take a serious view of such activities and will continue to take tough enforcement actions against those who flout the law.”
