The Police have arrested two men and one woman, aged between 24 and 51, for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities. 

 

On 6 July 2016, the Police received a report of loanshark harassment at a residential unit in Choa Chu Kang which had been splashed with paint. A cardboard with loanshark graffiti scrawled on it was also found outside the unit. Officers from Jurong Division conducted extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of Police Cameras (POLCAMs), the identities of the three suspects were established and they were arrested in Bedok and Pasir Ris on 7 July 2016.

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are believed to have carried out similar loanshark harassments in Ang Mo Kio, Sembawang, Buangkok Crescent, Telok Blangah, Jurong West and Choa Chu Kang housing estates. Two motorcycle helmets, apparels, a blue haversack, some debtor notes, a plastic bottle and three mobile phones were seized as case exhibits.

 

The suspects will be charged in Court on 8 Jul 2016 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
