The Police have arrested two men, aged 26 and 31, for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities. 

 

On 21 July 2016, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment where the main door of a residential unit at Tampines Street 24 was splashed with paint and loanshark related graffiti scrawled on the wall outside the unit. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of Police Cameras, (officers from Bedok Division arrested the 31-year-old man within 48 hours of the report along Tampines Street 24 on 22 July 2016.    

 

In a separate case, through follow-up investigations, officers from Bedok Division arrested a 26-year-old man along Yishun Avenue 11 for his suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment where the victim’s unit in Tampines was chained with a bicycle lock and splashed with paint. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be involved in several loanshark harassment cases.

 

Both men will be charged in Court on 23 July 2016 with offences of Harassment on Behalf of an Unlicensed Moneylender.

 

Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes if convicted.
