The Police have arrested a 22-year-old man for cheating.

Between March to May 2016, the Police received several reports from female victims who informed that they were cheated of their money by an online scammer. The suspect had befriended the victims through an online dating mobile application. Thereafter, the suspect purportedly told the victims that he was involved in a vehicle accident while texting them and required money to settle the matter privately with the other party. The suspect had also told some of the victims that he was an interior designer and needed money for a ‘work project’. After the money was transferred, the suspect would keep giving excuses to avoid repayment.

Officers from Tanglin Division conducted extensive investigations and established the identity of the suspect. He was arrested and will be charged in Court on 25 July 2016 with Cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. Any person found guilty for an offence of cheating may be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend up to 10 years, and shall also be liable to a fine.

The Police would like to advise members of public to remain vigilant and seek further verifications from parties involved whenever they receive any dubious requests or messages.
