The Police have arrested a 27 year old man for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

 

On 1 August 2016, Police received a report on loanshark harassment where a residential unit at Yuk Tong Avenue was splashed with paint and loanshark-related graffiti was also found scrawled on the unit’s wall. Through extensive ground enquiries and the aid of images from PolCams, officers from Clementi Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him at Changi Airport on 18 August 2016. 

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out similar acts of loanshark harassment in Jurong East, Jurong West, Bukit Batok, Yishun, Bedok, Pasir Ris and Tampines housing estates.

 

The suspect will be charged in Court on 19 August 2016 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
