The Traffic Police (TP) has arrested an 18-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of Dangerous Driving and Taking Part in an Unauthorised Speed Trial on 27 August 2016.
Investigations revealed that on 27 August 2016 at about 6.30pm, an accident occurred between a Nissan GTR driven by the suspect, and a Toyota motorcar at the open-space carpark near Stadium Road. The Nissan GTR was believed to have been accelerating and travelling at a high speed prior to the accident. As a result of the collision, both vehicles were seriously damaged and the 65-year-old driver of the Toyota motorcar reportedly sustained injuries to his ribs.
The 18-year-old suspect was arrested on 29 August 2016 and his driving license was suspended with immediate effect. The Nissan GTR involved in the collision has also been impounded by Traffic Police.
Motorists caught for the offence of taking part in an unauthorised speed trial under Section 116(7) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276 shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months and shall also be punished with a fine of not less than $1,000 and not more than $2,000 upon conviction and, in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months and a fine of not less than $2,000 and not more than $3,000. Vehicles involved in this offence may also be liable for forfeiture under Section 117(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276.
For the offence of Dangerous Driving under Section 64(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276, motorists shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $3,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months, or both upon conviction and, in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years, or both.
TP takes a stern view on such dangerous road behaviour as it puts the lives of the drivers and other road users at risk. Such errant motorists will be taken to task and can be expected to be dealt with to the full extent of the law.
