The Police have arrested a 22-year-old man for his suspected involvement in multiple cases of online purchase scams.

 

In September 2016, the Police received multiple reports from victims who were purportedly cheated by a seller who had offered Jay Chow concert tickets for sales online. The suspect had convinced the victims to meet up at public places where the forged tickets were passed to the victims when they paid in cash. When the victims went to the concert on 3 September 2016, they were unable to gain entry as the tickets were not authentic.

 

Officers from Bedok Division conducted extensive ground enquiries and established the identity of the suspect who  was arrested on 8 September 2016.

 

The suspect will be charged in Court on 10 September 2016 with Cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. Anyone found guilty of an offence of may be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend up to 10 years, and shall be liable to a fine.

 

Members of the public are advised to adopt the following measures to avoid falling victim to online purchase scams:

 

  1. Make your online purchases only from reputable vendors;

  2. If advanced payments are necessary, only transact with people you know and trust;  

  3. Check that the person or company you are buying from is physically located where they claim to be and

  4. Check the company or seller’s track record. Make enquiries with the clients and customers about the service they received from the seller.
