Chemical Industry Safety & Security Watch Group (SSWG) Counter-Terrorism Seminar

More than 300 participants from the chemical industry attended the Safety & Security Watch Group (SSWG) counter-terrorism seminar held at ITE College Central on Tuesday, 1 November 2016. The seminar was graced by Member of Parliament for West Coast GRC, Mr Patrick Tay Teck Guan.

This is the third of several counter-terrorism seminars that the Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force have organised for the business community, under the ambit of SGSecure. The inaugural seminar was first held for the Retail Industry on 18 July 2016 and the second seminar was held for the financial industry on 12 August 2016.

This seminar was organised for the chemical industry which is a vulnerable and high-impact target that terrorists may exploit.

At the seminar today, the participants were updated on the security threat situation and given advice on how they can tighten security measures to harden their workplace defence. They were also encouraged to promote a caring and cohesive community in their workplaces to help staff stay united and recover quickly in the aftermath of an attack. In addition, the Singapore Business Federation had also shared on the importance of robust Business Continuity Plans.

This seminar was also a good opportunity for the members to network and share best practices. Member of Parliament for West Coast GRC, Mr Patrick Tay Teck Guan said, “Chemical plants and storage facilities are among the most vulnerable high-impact targets that terrorists can exploit. We therefore need the chemical sector to take proactive steps to harden their defences and tighten their security measures given the current terror threat situation. They should also review and exercise their emergency response plans to be better prepared for an attack. They must also have a business continuity plan in place to help them recover quickly in the aftermath of an attack and continuously review the plan.”
