The Police have arrested three men, aged between 22 and 29 for suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

On 2 November 2016, through follow up investigations, officers from Bedok Division arrested one male suspect aged 29 along Owen Road.  Later, on the same day, another two male suspects aged 22 and 26 were arrested along Marina Gardens Drive.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the three suspects are believed to have carried out several acts of harassment in Bedok, Pasir Ris and Woodlands housing estates by locking the debtor’s unit with bicycle locks and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti on the walls. Three handphones containing debtor’s records, three black markers and two bicycle locks were seized as case exhibits.

The two male suspects aged 22 and 29 will be charged in Court on 4 November 2016 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition), while the male suspect aged 26 has been released on police bail. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years, and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
