The Police have arrested a 29-year-old man for his suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

 

On 9 November 2016, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment where the doors of residential units in Bukit Panjang Ring Road were splashed with paint. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of footages from Police Cameras (POLCAMs), the identity of the suspect was established and he was arrested along Bukit Batok Street 21 on 10 November 2016.

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment in Yishun, Ang Mo Kio, Rivervale, Tampines, Choa Chu Kang, Jurong West and Bukit Panjang. One mobile phone, apparels, a pair of slippers, one red marker pen and some notes were seized as case exhibits.

 

The suspect will be charged in Court on 11 Nov 2016 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
