The police are investigating a 27-year-old man for lodging a false report.
On 13 November 2016, the man had lodged a report at Toa Payoh Neighbourhood Police Centre stating that he was assaulted and robbed of his personal belongings including a mobile phone along Macpherson Road earlier that day. After the incident, he sought medical assistance at a hospital for the injuries purportedly sustained as a result of the assault.
In the course of investigations, officers from Tanglin Division detected many inconsistencies and established that the man had provided false information to the police by claiming he was robbed and assaulted by three unknown men.
Investigations against the man are ongoing. Anyone convicted for giving any information which he or she knows to be false to a public servant shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to $5000, or with both.
The Police would like to remind the public that Police resources could have been put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies than investigating into false reports or false information. Those who lodge false Police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.
