The Police have arrested four youths, aged between 16 and 17, for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities in two separate cases. 

 

In the first case, on 6 November 2016, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment where a residential unit at Blk 210 Boon Lay Place was splashed with paint and loanshark-related graffiti was also scrawled on the wall along the staircase. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of footages from Police Cameras (PolCams), officers from Jurong Division established the identities of the 3 suspects and arrested them on 14 and 15 November 2016. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are believed to have carried out similar acts of loanshark harassments in Boon Lay, Hougang, Upper Boon Keng, Ang Mo Kio and Marymount housing estates. Two mobile phones and cash amounting to $92/- were seized as case exhibits.

 

In the second case, on 15 November 2016, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment where the main door of a residential unit at Blk 103 Tampines Street 11 was splashed with blue liquid. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of footages from Police Cameras (PolCams), officers from from Bedok Division arrested the suspect within 1 hour of the report lodged.  Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have committed another similar act of harassment at along Yishun Street 11 by splashing red liquid and scrawling loanshark-related graffiti on the walls. One mobile phone, one blue marker, latex gloves and a mask were found on the suspect and seized as case exhibits.

 

The three suspects for the first case will be charged in Court on 16 November 2016. Investigations against the suspect for the second case are ongoing. Under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
