The Police have arrested a 32-year-old man for his suspected involvement in loansharking activities.
On 20 October 2016 at about 12 pm, the victim lodged a report informing that he had received a debtor's note at Tuas West Street. The suspect’s identity was established through extensive follow-up investigations by officers from Clementi Division and he was arrested along Genting Lane on 12 December 2016.
Two Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards and one mobile phone were seized as case exhibits. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment island-wide. He is also believed to have assisted loansharks to conduct money transfers.
The suspect will be charged in Court on 14 December 2016 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
