The Police have arrested a 26-year-old man for his suspected involvement in loansharking activities.

On 6 December 2016, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment at a HDB unit in Bedok South. The suspect had locked the main gate of the residential unit with bicycle lock and scribbled loanshark related graffiti on the wall outside the unit. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police Cameras (POLCAMs), officers from Bedok Division arrested the suspect along Boon Lay Avenue on 19 December 2016.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in several other loanshark harassment cases islandwide.

The suspect will be charged in Court on 21 December 2016 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act, first-time offenders found guilty of committing loanshark harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to be punished with not less than three strokes of the cane.
