The Police have arrested a 23-year-old man for his suspected involvement in loansharking activities.
On 19 December 2016, Police received a report on loanshark harassment at a residential unit at Bukit Batok Street 32. The gate of the unit had been secured with a bicycle lock and was splashed with paint. Loanshark-related graffiti was also scrawled on the wall. Through extensive ground enquiries and the aid of images from Police Cameras (POLCAMs), Police identified and arrested the suspect at Kitchener Road on 5 January 2017.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have carried out similar acts of harassment at Bukit Panjang, Shunfu, Hougang, Punggol and Teban Gardens housing estates. One mobile phone, clothes, a sling bag, one black marker pen and a can of paint were seized as case exhibits.
The suspect will be charged in Court on 7 January 2017 under the Moneylenders Act 2010 (Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
