42 Arrested for Illegal Public Gaming and Gang-Related Activities

The Police have arrested 41 men and one woman, aged between 16 and 57, for their suspected involvement in illegal public gaming and gang-related activities.

 

In a 5-hour operation on 20 March 2017, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) conducted raids in Geylang resulting in the arrests. During the operation, items including cash amounting to about S$21,000/-, mobile phones and gambling paraphernalia were seized as case exhibits.

 

Investigations against the suspects are ongoing. 

 

Under the Common Gaming Houses Act, Chapter 49, any person gaming in a public place shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both.  Any person who instigates, promotes or intentionally facilitates public gaming shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000, and shall also be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years. Under the Societies Act, any person who is or acts as a member of an unlawful society, or attends a meeting of an unlawful society, shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years or to both.

 

The Police will continue to take tough enforcement action against those involved in illegal activities and they will face the full brunt of the law.
