The Police have arrested a 24-year-old man who is believed to be involved in a case of Housebreaking and Theft by Night at an industrial building located along Tannery Lane.

On 22 March 2017 at about 2.16 pm, the Police received a report that an office at the said building had been broken into. The suspect had allegedly used an umbrella to shield himself from the CCTVs in an attempt to conceal his identity. Cash amounting to more than S$2,000/- was found missing from the premises.

Through extensive ground enquiries and investigations, officers from Bedok Division established the identity of the suspect. On 23 March 2017 at about 12.53am, the suspect was arrested when he tried to leave Singapore through the Woodlands Checkpoint. Investigations against the suspect are ongoing.

The offence of Housebreaking and Theft by Night under Section 457 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, carries an imprisonment term of not less than 2 years and not more than 14 years, and shall also be liable to fine.

The Police would like to advise all property owners to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

- Secure all doors, roller shutters, windows and other openings with good quality grills and close-shackled padlocks when leaving your premises unattended, even for a short while;

- Refrain from keeping large sums of cash in unattended premises; and

- Install a burglar alarm and CCTVs, to cover the access points into your premises. Ensure that they are tested periodically and are in good working condition.
