The Police have arrested four men aged between 21 to 26 for their suspected involvement in cases of Attempted Armed Robbery along Ophir Road and Robbery along Tannery Road.
On 18 April 2017, Police received a report that two men were robbed near a bus stop along Ophir Road. Investigations revealed that the victims were attacked by two unknown men masked with handkerchiefs. The two men pointed a sharp blade at the victims and assaulted them while demanding the victims to hand over their belongings. They then fled when the two victims shouted for help. In another case reported on 19 April 2017, another man reported that he was robbed of his mobile phone and wallet by two unknown men who were also masked along Tannery Road.
Officers from Central Division conducted extensive ground enquiries and managed to establish the identities of the suspects. An operation was then conducted and four men were arrested along Pioneer Road North on 20 April 2017 at 7 pm.
The four men will be charged in Court on 22 April 2017. Two of them will be charged with the offence of Attempted Armed Robbery with Hurt punishable under Section 394 and read with Section 397 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, they may face a jail term which may extend to not less than 5 years and not more than 20 years, and shall also be punished with caning with not less than 12 strokes. The remaining two will be charged for the offence of Robbery with common intention, punishable under Section 392 and read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 and Abetment to commit Robbery under Section 392 read with Section 109 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, they may face a jail term which may extend to not less than 3 years and not more than 14 years, and shall also be punished with caning with not less than 12 strokes.
